So, I've been having some problems with my lower back the past few weeks. It hasn't been terrible, and I have just been ignoring it, thinking that eventually it will go away. But yesterday it was hurting quite a bit more than usual, so I called the doctor and made an appointment. When I went in to see the doctor it just so happens I was wearing a t-shirt from a youth group I used to go to in Tupelo called C27, short for Colossians 2:7, their core verse. The verse is actually written out on the back of the shirt. When I turned around to let the doctor look at my back, he asked me casually, "So are you part of The Navigators?" "Excuse me?" "The Navigators...are you wearing one of their shirts?" "Umm...this is a shirt from a youth group back home..." "Oh, okay. Colossians 2:7 is a verse that the Navigators do a Bible study on." I smiled politely and tried my best to look interested, all the while hoping that we could get back to my back. He did, but continued to make conversation. "So what church did you go to?" "The Orchard." "Oh, I've been by there...did they do a study on Colossians 2:7?" "No sir, that was just their name. We studied all different parts of the Bible." "Where do you go to church here?" "First Baptist." "Okay...Now, that would be a different type of church than the Orchard, wouldn't it?" "Yes sir. The Orchard is Methodist, but they're both Christian, so that was really the only thing that mattered to me." "Right. So, are you involved in any campus ministries?" "I go to RUF." (Looking a bit confused) "Now, that's Presbyterian, isn't it?" "Yes sir." "Do they have any small groups that do a study on Colossians 2:7?" "Umm...no sir, I don't think so..." "Well, I think there is a group iof the Navigators in Starkville, but I think they've already started meeting, so you would have to wait until next time. " The conversation went on like this for some time longer. The man was basically obsessed with Colossians 2:7. It was really one of the strangest conversations I have ever participated in in my life. |
